![]() Starting in the southwest corner of the Highways 2A-Spruce Meadows Trail junction is a fairly well-birded and well known slough known to some as Sheriff King Slough, because it is actually on Sheriff King Street accessed from Spruce Meadows Trail. In the days of some of Calgary’s older birders in the 1970s and 1980s, it was known as the Priddis Radio Towers Slough. ![]() We could probably define the area as south of Spruce Meadows Trail and bounded on the west by Highway 22 on the east by Highway 2A, and, on the south by Highway 549. For birding purposes, it offers a fairly widespread type of habitat. Living in the south end of Calgary since 1993, I have had much cause to bird and explore the area which I call the “Hills” which is directly south of Calgary. They have a big voice for such a tiny bird. You can hear them singing all along the river valleys and in many residential neighbourhoods too. House Wrens are back in the city in their usual huge numbers. This appears to be a recently fledged chickadee, begging for food. Ospreys will often add to the nest throughout the summer.īlack-capped Chickadee, Bowmont Park, May 18, 2017. The Osprey is carrying material to line the nest, even though they probably have already laid their eggs. They lay their eggs right on the gravel, but the eggs are very hard to see, and the parents are really good at not giving away the nest location, and at distracting predators.
